Odds of Dying by Cause

Interesting data from the National Safety Council on Odds of Dying for non-natural causes of death.

Surprising figures

  • The "safest way to travel" appears to be by streetcar, followed by tricycle (at least by number of deaths).
  • Dogbite deaths outnumber poisonous snakes and spiders combined, but bitten or struck by "other mammals" is significantly higher (this justifies my comfort with snakes and spiders while maintaining an intense fear of rats).
  • You have a 1 in 125,000 chance of dying from "contact with hot tap-water"
