The end of PHEAA?

Governor Rendell says PHEAA "doesn't have any reason to exist" in the Patriot News. Though it comes with a caveat:

"There has to be a culture change at PHEAA, and there has to be, I think, some shaking out from top to bottom," Rendell said. "Otherwise, it doesn't have any reason to exist."

The end of PHEAA?

The end of lavish spending -- True.
The end of lavish retreats -- True, they ended a couple years ago.
The end of PHEAA -- False.

The truth:
PHEAA has acknowledged a need for change, and is working on making corrections to the problems of the past. In the financial aid industry, especially a very competitive market here in Pennsylvania has caused PHEAA to find ways to bring in revenue to help keep up with the rising costs of tuition, ultimately helping Pennsylvania students.

However, as a public entity, PHEAA has an obligation to hold it's business standards a little higher than it's competitors. With the Media circus happening, point has been well taken.

PHEAA's public service mission is to help students achieve a postsecondary education, without worrying about the financial barriers that keep students from achieving their dreams.

PHEAA wants to help make the Pennsylvania workforce stronger and better. PHEAA wants to see students stay and work in Pennsylvania. PHEAA wants to see students follow and achieve their dreams.

The Governor has no jurisdiction with PHEAA and its business practices. He may be able to throw up barriers for PHEAA, but inevitably he is hurting the students...not PHEAA.
