For-Profit Philadelphia Schools Show Gains
A new study by Paul Peterson and Matthew Chingos finds that the Philadelphia public schools contracted out to for-profit operators showed significant gains in student achievement.
Specifically, the study finds that students in for-profit schools impact was about 60% of a year's worth of learning in math, and 36% of a year's worth of learning in reading (not statistically signficant), versus school district management. On the other hand, not-for-profit managers performed worse than district-run schools.
