Obama on School Choice: For or Against?

The Cato Institute blog reports that Barack Obama told members of the American Federation of Teachers he is opposed to school vouchers, when referring to the "tired rhetoric about vouchers and school choice." What he conveniently left out is that he takes full advantage of school choice by enrolling his daughters in a private school, which costs approximately $20,000 a year for middle school students.

Sen. Obama is not along in his hypocrisy over school choice. Many members of Congress choose to send their children to private schools, according to a yearly survey by the Heritage Foundation - while denying those same opportunities to low-income families.

On a positive note, Obama has broken with the teachers' union on at least one issue. He was recently booed at an address to the National Education Association when he expressed his support for merit pay.
