Taxpayer control in name only

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review editorial on the bill of goods sold to taxpayers with Act 1 of 2006. Supposedly, the General Assembly plans to tackle the issue of property taxes again in the fall.

The question is, will the public go for another "shift and shaft" proposal? We don't think so. Tax RELIEF means tax reduction, not just changing which pocket school districts get to pick. But the only ideas Harrisburg can come up with is tax SHIFTING -- whereby one man's tax relief becomes another man's tax increase.

Until state lawmakers are willing to address the SPENDING side of the ledger, there will never be any long-lasting tax relief for anyone.
