How Much Are Public School Teachers Paid?

A report from the Manhattan Institute examines teacher pay across the nation, taking on the common claim that teachers are underpaid. Generally, author Jay Greene finds that teachers earn significantly higher hourly salary that other white-collar profession. Findings specific to PA include:

  • In the York metro area, median teacher pay was 45% higher than pay for other white collar professions.
  • In the Reading metro area, median teacher pay was 45% higher.
  • In the Philadelphia metro area, median teacher pay was 46% higher.
  • In the Johnstown metro area, median teacher pay was 52% higher.
  • And in the Pittsburgh metro area, median teacher pay was 61% higher than pay for other white collar professions.
